Q: The images seem slightly blurry on your website. Is this intentional?
I've seen your work in person and
the images are gorgeous and crystal clear!
A: My images are scanned in and posted at a low-resolution to discourage illegal Internet copying. Each and every one of them to be as clear and vivid as if you were looking through a window! At my shows, one of the most frequent questions I'm asked is if my photographs are real, because they appear so gorgeous. My images are all actual photographs and are not graphically enhanced or manipulated in any way. What you see is exactly what I saw when I took the picture. I have every print developed to true likeness, and color, so that you may enjoy incredible sharpness and flawless detail when looking at a scene on your wall ... almost in the same way I did when I saw the scene in Nature. Q: How often do you go to China for Photography? A: I have photographed China 20 times since 1981, I usually make one trip to China each year between January and April. Q: What kind of camera do you use? A: I mainly use medium format Fujica GL690 and a Linhof Technica 4x5 large format camera, I don't shoot 4x5 film that often, last few years the only time I use large format 4x5 I use it for shooting 6x12 film back. ( Update: as of June 3rd 2007, I traded my Linhof 4x5 large format to a Canon 5D digital SLR camera. added 5Dmarkll as of Jan 2009 ) Q: What kind of film do you use? A: I have been using Fujicolor negative film CN120 for both my cameras. I don't shoot slide film any more, for black and white work I use Kodak TMax. ( now all Digital using CF cards) Q: Since you do all the framing and matting, how do you find time to do the printing? A: It's hard but I manage to do it all by myself. I do most of the printing in the winter between Feb. and April each year. Q: Why don't you let the photo lab do your printing? A: Printing is an art form. It is very personal, although it is time consuming, this way, I have total quality control. (Now using Epson 7600 with Ultrachrome ink wide format printer)
Q: How do you find time to do all these by yourself and have time to photograph China and other places? A: I usually schedule about 12 -17 art shows a year. If I plan to do more photo trips I will schedule less shows that year. Q: If you only could use one camera, what would it be? A: I would use my medium format camera, it depends on what type of photography I am doing and where to go, 90% of my work now I use my Medium Format Fujica GL690, I use it most often, it is 6x9 cm (Neg. Size), right now I'm experiencing the Linhoff 2x3 format camera, it has the camera movement like the 4x5 large format, I have 8 lenses ranging form 65mm to 310mm telephoto. I had it over four years now, I like it quite well. (camera shown in my Self-Portrait). Now: all Digital. Q: What do you do in your spare time when you are not doing photography related? A: I knew from the very beginning, once I got my hands on a computer, that I would get hooked. It amaze me what a computer can do and especially the internet. Now I have more reasons to use a computer: I manage my photograph inventory and put out a web site of my own. At the moment, I'm learning "HTML" and "JavaScript", hoping that can sharpen my web design skill and continue to improve my KingWu.com site. |
